Daniel vented his rage by nailing plywood over the broken window and then turned his attention to the dishes and the mess in the kitchen. Meanwhile, Sean cleaned up the broken glass and changed clothes.

My first order of business, as far as I was concerned, was to prevent, as best I could, any more surveillance of our house by Moses or anyone else. State and federal law limited what I could do with my wards, but we still had good options without venturing into illegal territory.

Once Daniel finished hammering, I joined Malcolm in the guest room and told him about Moses’s phone call. He went nuclear at the news that Moses and Nora had Arkady.

While Malcolm fumed and flitted around the room, I sat in the chair next to the bed and held Ronan’s hand. Despite Carly’s witchy healing magic, charms, and amulets, he seemed no better today than yesterday. And with the window boarded up, the room felt dark and grim, even with the lights on. Maybe we should move him to the workout room. I had no idea if sunshine could help him or not, but a gloomy windowless room surely wouldn’t.

Esme’s shift to dragon and angry destruction of the window had sent Rogue running, but he came back to lie across Ronan’s lower legs once the room was quiet again. For her part, Esme had returned to her cat form and curled up next to Ronan to watch Daniel cover the broken window.

When my ghost sidekick finally stopped flitting, I outlined what I wanted to do with our house and perimeter wards to prevent electronic surveillance from directional microphones or drones from picking up sounds or images. Scrambler wards would be our best defense.

“I haven’t made scrambler wards for a long time,” Malcolm said. “I can certainly help, but your air magic is better suited for them than my earth magic.”

“I know. I intend to build some as soon as Sean and I hash out the details of this meeting tonight and figure out what we can do about John West—if anything. I just need you to get the process started.”

“This whole thing is ridiculous.” He muttered a few choice curse words. “Did you ask Moses to back off Dominic? No, of course you didn’t. You’re not going to ask him for anything because he’d just use it against you.”

“Exactly. He’d use it as leverage.” I rubbed Ronan’s hand while I thought. “But if Dominic quit nosing around us as of last night, he should be in the clear.”

“Unless your grandfather still considers him a threat,” Malcolm pointed out. “Which he might. Even if he quit the job, he’s still got a grudge. Plus there’s still whoever hired him.”

“I know.” I rested my head on the bed. “Damn it, I feel bad about Arkady. I knew Moses would get his hands on someone I care about. It was only a matter of time.”

“No one’s safe from your grandfather,” Malcolm said quietly. “Whether they’re friends or enemies.”

“Or people who don’t even know me, as last night’s fire proves.
